50 Shades of Chicken - Wow... never thought of chicken this way...

Unless you've been under a rock for the past year or so, you've heard about 50 Shades of Grey, by E.L. James, an erotic romance novel.  There have been many a parody written, but this one, 50 Shades of Chicken by F.L. Fowler (a pseudonym, we are told), is the first cookbook I've run across.

Let me just say that I've never read a soft-porn cookbook before, and probably never will again.  If "fowl" language (forgive me...) offends you, this is NOT a cookbook for you.  It's definitely NOT "my mother's cookbook" as the language is like that of 50 Shades - some would find it offensive and I kid you not there.  Before and after the recipes are fictional pieces where the chicken ("Miss Hen") talks to both herself and "Blades" (the equivalent to Christian Grey).   The author obviously either read the series cover to cover and took it to heart, or sat there with it as they created each recipe to find a way to tie it in.

Between the covers and the storyline, are 50 pretty amazing chicken recipes!

There are three sections: The Novice Bird, Falling to Pieces and Birds Gone Wild.

In section one, we are introduced to the two main characters, the chicken and the chef and 17 recipes that are all pretty straight forward and not too complicated in "how-to" but are filled with sexual entendres. After reading this you will never look at trussing a chicken (see page 36 & 37) the same way again.  Personally, I would prefer to do it with my shirt on, but this chef didn't... I'll say no more.

Here's one I tried - recipe forthcoming this weekend!!
The next section, Falling to Pieces, gives you 18 recipes for chicken parts and pieces.   From breasts, to thighs and wings, there is something delicious to do with all the parts of a chicken here.  Hubby asked if we could try the Holy Hell Hot Jalapeno Wings OR the Bacon Bound Wings (maple glazed wings with bacon) SOON!!    I am more of a white meat chicken person, so I wanted to try the recipe Blushing Parts (cranberry baked chicken with apple cider) first.

The last section is called Birds Gone Wild: Advanced Techniques.  Julia Childs, step out of the way...  these are a bit more complicated and require you to do something beyond patting dry, oiling, tossing on spices and putting in the oven. I've been looking for a croquette recipe and I think I found it: Coquettish Croquettes (crunchy chicken parmesan croquettes) - pulsing the cooked chicken in the food processor and mixing with tasty spices and such.

This cookbook is not for the faint of heart, but if you are a lover of chicken, you should check it out!  Keep thinking "parody... parody...parody" and if YOU'VE read the books, well, you'll know what to expect!  I am thinking this would make a GREAT wedding shower gift... just saying....

Would you like a sample?  Here's a book trailer video:

These are "50 Chicken Recipes Bound to be Delicious" and that's no lie!  The ingredient choices are excellent and the methods, well.... we can all learn new things, right?

  1. Well with parts like breasts and thighs I imagine chicken (or any fowl) lends itself best to a book like this. I would just love to see a copy of it! And bet the recipes ARE good.
